Biography,
My name is Dany Denzel.
I live and work in Vienna, Austria and in Arles, South of France.
For as long as I can remember, I have really loved the medium of watercolour in all its various aspects. I do love to paint both, in a very detailed way or not at all, rather free.
Every Year, I am commissioned to paint a large watercolour serving as a Christmas card for a big company in Austria. Lately, I have been fascinated by large city-portraits throughout Austria, mostly done from a high viewpoint.
This work is done plein air, which means, I choose a place from where to paint and I finish all my accurate pencil drawings on the original paper, taking also colour samples.
Later on, as I continue with watercolours, I can then finish in my studio.
I was trained as an architect (outside and inside) at the Vienna University of Applied Arts at a time when you were supposed to be able to draw and paint. My studies were held in a so-called ‘Masterclass’, where, after an entry exam only 7 – 8 students were admitted per year. I worked for many years in several architecture firms, never forgetting my love of painting watercolours.
When my boys were older, I discovered Botanical Art, first in the Botanical Garden Vienna and I later obtained the Kew Certificate, and the Diploma in Botanical Illustration, in Edinburgh. I have to say that in these courses, I really learned a lot, specially new techniques and scientific observations.
I don’t paint strictly botanical works right now. I like to paint flower-portraits on rather rough cold-pressed paper with less botanical information.
Recently my interest was in painting all the nice fruits and vegetables that I find in the Provence markets around Arles, South of France, where I live and work a good part of the year.
I am so fascinated by the vivid colours and textures.
So to sum up my four points of interest in painting watercolours are;
- vedutas – city views
- private homes for commissions in a quite accurate way
- non-strictly botanical floral portraits of flowers that appeal to me
- rather free watercolours of fruits, vegetables and flowers
I continue to reguarly attend painting courses every year in Devon with Rosie Sanders.
Both in 2018 and 2019 courses with Anne Marie Evans in Elba, Italy.
Again 2021 in Corfu, Greece, 2022 in Romania and 2023 in Vienna.

mein Name ist Dany Denzel.
Ich lebe und arbeite in Wien und in Arles in Süd – Frankreich.
1989 schloß ich mein Architekturstudium an der “Universität für Angewandte Kunst in Wien” mit Diplom ab.
Ich bin eine Architektin, die traurig ist, dass Architekten heutzutage kaum mehr mit Bleistiften und in Tusche zeichnen und dass die meiste Arbeit am Computer stattfindet.
Ich liebe es zu zeichnen und zu aquarellieren und für viele Jahre habe ich hauptsächlich Bauten, Stadtlandschaften und Veduten gemalt.
Seit 2008 nehme ich regelmäßig an Margarete Pertls Kursen für “Botanische Illustration im Botanischen Garten der Universität Wien” teil.
2013 konnte ich nach einigen Kursen mit Annie Farrer in Kew Garden, London, mit dem “Kew Certificate for Botanical Illustration” abschließen.
Von 2014 bis 2016 konnte ich den Diplomkurs für botanische Illustration im RBGE ( Royal Botanical Garden Edinburgh ) besuchen, den ich im September 2016 mit Auszeichnung abschlossen habe. Meine Tutorin in Edinburgh war Jacqui Pestell.
Ich besuche regelmäßig Malkurse sowohl in Wien mit Margarete Pertl als auch in England mit Rosie Sanders
in Devon, wo ich zuletzt im November 2021 war.
2018 und 2019 nahm ich jeweils für eine Woche an einem Malkurs mit Ann Marie Evans in Elba, Italien teil.

J’habite et je travaille à Vienne en Autriche et à Arles en France.
1989 j’ai terminé mes etudes d’Architecture à “l’Université des arts appliqués” avec diplome.
Je suis une architecte, qui est un peu triste, que les architectes ne dessinent plus au crayon ou à l’encre et que la plupart du travail est fait sur l’ordinateur.
J’aime dessiner et peindre des aquarelles et pour longtemps mes sujets étaient que des batiments, des panorama des villes et des vedutes.
Depuis 2008 j’ai participé regulierement aux cours pour l’illustration botanique de Mme. Margareta Pertl dans le jardin botanique de l’Université de Vienne.
2013 j’ai obtenu le ” Kew Certificate for Botanical Illustration” apres avoir participé à plusieurs cours avec Mme. Annie Ferrer à Kew, Londres.
De 2014 à 2016 j’ai participé au cours ” Diplome en Illustration Botanique ” au jardin Botanique d’Edinburgh, le ” Royal Botanical Garden Edinburgh “, RBGE.
En Septembre 2016 j’ai obtenue mon diplom avec distinction. Chargé de cours était Mme. Jacqui Pestell.
Encore je continue de participer au cours de peintures differents.
Soit à Vienne avec Margarete Pertl dans le Jardin Botanique de Vienne, soit en Angleterre avec Rosie Sanders à Devon, où j’étais dernièrement en Novembre 2021
